Essential oil extraction can double farmers’ income

Farmers can double their income after extraction of essential oil by selling the multiple products including hydrosol and the remaining biomass as they are sought for premium soaps, shampoos, creams, cosmetics and spices. The scientists of Forest Research Institute (FRI) said this during a day-long training programme on extraction of essential oil from aromatic plants held in collaboration with Mussoorie based progressive farmer Jyoti Marwah. As a case study essential oil was extracted from ginger using an efficient field distillation unit.

FRI’s Vineet Kumar said that the training was a part of the project funded by the Department of Science and Technology with the aim of training farmers so that they are motivated to grow essential oil bearing crops as it would be helpful in their income generation. He further said that essential oil bearing crops are easy to grow and maintain as they are not affected by grazing animals. Marwah motivated the local farmers by emphasising on the uses and benefits of essential oils in various sectors.
