Panchayati Raj system being treated undemocratically, influential group managing the matter, alleges Rawat
Questioning the repeated postponement of Panchayat elections in Haridwar, former chief minister and senior Congress leader Harish Rawat has announced that he will sit in protest outside the chief minister’s residence on hunger strike on August 18. He said this while addressing the media here on Saturday.
Regarding the delimitation of Haridwar district Panchayat elections, Rawat said that the way Panchayat election is was postponed in the name of reservation and delimitation in Haridwar district was very disappointing and was a threat to democracy. He alleged that it appears as if a group of influential persons is managing this matter, preventing some people from contesting Panchayat elections and is orchestrating actions to end the leadership of the rural area. It seems as if the Panchayat institution and the district magistrate are under serious pressure in a manner which threatens the Panchayati Raj system itself in the district. Protesting against this, Rawat said that he will sit on hunger strike outside the chief minister’s residence on August 18.
Apart from this, the former CM also lambasted the Central government and alleged that all the central agencies including the Election Commission, Enforcement Directorate and Central Bureau of Investigation are working at the behest of the Central government, which is a matter of great concern, added the senior Congress leader.
