The high-power committee headed by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has put its seal of approval on the appointment of two election commissioners. They are Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Gyanesh Kumar Gupta, two retired IAS officers. These appointments were necessitated by the resignations of two election commissioners Anup Chandra Pandey in February and Arun Goyal in March. Immediately after the approval of the names by the committee, the President Droupadi Murmu issued the order of their appointment.
Sandhu of 1998 batch of Punjab cadre is the former chief secretary of Uttarakhand. Notably, he was holding this post when Pushkar Singh Dhami assumed charge as the chief minister in 2021. Gyanesh Kumar Gupta of 1988 batch of Kerala cadre was the in-charge of the Kashmir division of the Union home ministry when the Centre abrogated the Article 370 of the Constitution.
