The governor lieutenant general (retd) Gurmit Singh, stated that the excessive use of mobile phone, television and other electronic gadgets has increased the risk of eye strain and related ailments. He said this at the inauguration of eye disease awareness seminar and cataract operation week organised by HNB Uttarakhand Medical Education University (HNBUMU) at Raj Bhawan on Tuesday.

Under the guidance of the governor, free eye disease screenings and cataract surgery camps will be held in 15 medical units across the State from December 25 to 31. These camps will offer free eye examinations, consultations, and cataract operations.

Singh said that eyes are one of the most precious gifts from god and one should care for them. He pointed out that the modern lifestyle characterised by excessive use of mobile devices, television and digital screens, has increased the risk of eye strain and diseases. As people age, they are more likely to face challenges related to eye conditions, particularly cataracts. This campaign aims to provide eye health services and treatment to all segments of society, especially in rural areas and underserved communities.

Singh further said that this initiative is a significant public service campaign, stating that it will not only assist in treating eye diseases but also enhance awareness of eye health. He commended the efforts of various health institutions and encouraged the public to take full advantage of the available camps. Further, the head of the ophthalmology department at AIIMS Rishikesh, Sanjeev Kumar Mittal informed about the eye diseases and preventive measures. He emphasised the importance of lifestyle improvements and timely treatment to avoid cataracts and other eye disorders.
