Expedite establishment of Uttarakhand Landslide Mitigation & Management Centre: Sandhu

Chief secretary Sukhbir Singh Sandhu has directed the Disaster Management secretary to expedite the establishment of the Uttarakhand Landslide Mitigation and Management Centre. Chairing a review meeting here on Wednesday, Sandhu said that this centre should be made according to international standards.

The chief secretary said that landslides are a major problem in the Himalayan States but there is no institution even at the national level dedicated to the study, research and mitigation of landslides. In this sphere, the Uttarakhand Landslide Mitigation and Management Centre can play an important role by providing its services not only to other States but also at the national and international levels. He directed that the focus should be laid on world-class specialisation in order to maintain the quality of works in this centre. Only professionals from the relevant field should be placed in this centre. Professionals working in national and international institutions related to this subject should be contacted for this purpose, he said. The chief secretary further directed that dates should be set at every level so that the Uttarakhand Landslide Mitigation and Management Centre is made operational soon. The Disaster Management secretary Ranjeet Sinha and other officials concerned were also present in the meeting.
