In latest news from Dehradun, as per the preliminary probe report involving the Silkyara tunnel collapse submitted by the expert panel, the incident happened due to multiple reasons, including wrong alignment of the tunnel construction work, lack of adequate supervision and reprofiling done without adequate safeguards being taken for those engaged in the construction. Sources privy to the report details said that it was critical of both National Highway and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) and Navyuga Engineering Company Limited (NECL) involved in the project. Notably, NHIDCL had given the contract to NECL for the project. A part of the under-construction tunnel stretching from Barkot to Silkyara had collapsed following landslide on November 12, leaving 41 workers working inside stuck up. The trapped workers had been evacuated after they spent 17 days inside the collapsed tunnel. The State government sources said that the preliminary report was submitted on December 22 and added that the resumption of the construction work and repairing of the cavity would be started only after the report that contains suggestions is studied.
