Experts deliberate on conservation of glaciers at water at USAC

The World Water Day was observed at the Uttarakhand Space Application Centre (USAC) on Saturday with a workshop on glacier conservation. Scientists and officials of various linear departments along with researchers deliberated on water conservation through scientific and traditional methods.
Vinay Shankar Prasad Sinha from the JNU Centre for the Study of Regional Development said that water conservation and enhancement is vital for the future. He also informed about the negative impacts of climate change and changes in the land surface on aspects of water holding. Sinha also referred to the water issues in the Himalayan region and springshed management. Regarding Uttarakhand, he spoke about source and water collection revival for improving water security. Sinha also spoke on the need for environmental stability and flood early warning system. Stressing on the need for conservation of glaciers in the Himalaya, he said that this is vital for the long term security of the coming generations. USAC scientist Asha Thapliyal informed that the water resource management division at the centre had mapped the snow covered area of Pindari river basin using satellite data of 2023-24. This is being used for comparative study of changes in the snow covered area. She also informed about the other works of USAC.
