Eight men sustained serious injuries in an explosion that occurred in a scrap dealer’s shop in Raipur block of Dehradun on Thursday. A 19-year-old young man Anuj also lost his left hand below the wrist in the blast. He was the one who was hitting the explosive to extract metal when it exploded in the afternoon, the Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh said. He informed that as per the investigation so far, some scrap dealers who had rented a shop in lane number 3 of the Kidduwala area found an explosive used by police or armed forces for training. They possibly found it near the firing range located in the Maldevta area of Raipur. When Anuj repeatedly hit the explosive, it possibly got triggered and exploded. The police got information about the incident in the afternoon and reached the spot along with the bomb disposal squad (BDS) and fire tenders. The injured men were admitted to the Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) hospital and the Deen Dayal Upadhyay (Coronation) Hospital. They have been identified as Anuj (19), Abhi (20), Shivam (20), Bablu (25), Yogesh (27), Rohit (30), Buddh Kumar and Sameer. Out of all these, Anuj’s condition was critical the most possibly because he was quite near to the explosive when the blast happened. The health of others appeared to be stable till late on Thursday. Singh said that the owner of the shop Ramesh Kumar Khadka told the police that he had given his shop on rent to a man named Shubham about a month ago. The SSP said that BDS also searched the shop to ensure no other similar explosives were there that could cause further damage to lives and property. The police also registered a case under relevant sections at the Raipur police station regarding the incident. Singh said that the police are yet to verify all the claims and possibilities that caused this fatal incident which can be done only after interrogating the victims. They all sustained injuries and were unable to communicate after the blast. The police will question them soon after the doctors declare them fit enough to talk, he added.
