The experts of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Rishikesh have cautioned that the asthma patients should be extra careful during the winter season.  They warned that excess cold and fog can prove fatal for asthma patients.

The symptoms of asthma are cough, cold, sneezing, shortness of breath and whistling sound during breathing. Cold, fog, mist, dust, pollution, infection, paint odour and pollination increase the chances of Asthma.

The director of AIIMS Rishikesh Ravikant said that in view of the prevailing pandemic of Covid-19, the asthma patients should not forget to wear masks. He added that wearing a mask will also help the asthma patients in screening the cold air. He said that when cold air enters the body through the breathing, the airways begin to swell and this condition is dangerous for asthma patients. The head of department (HoD) of pulmonary medicine department, Girish Sindhwani said that asthma can happen to any person and at any age. “This disease does not spread through infection, but it is an allergic disease. This allergy due to colds and frequent sneezes takes the form of asthma when it reaches the lungs in the chest through the nose and throat. The patients should start treatment as soon as the initial symptoms of asthma appear. If not treated in time, the patient starts to develop problems in breathing and due to suffocation he may have an asthma attack,’’ he said.  Sindhwani said that asthma patients should take the medicine regularly and use the inhaler regularly.
