Eye allergies on the rise due to seasonal changes

Saturday, 06 April 2024 | PNS | DEHRADUN

With the region witnessing temperature changes, several doctors in the city’s hospitals have reported an increase in cases of seasonal eye allergies this month. They have observed an increase in patients exhibiting symptoms like redness and itching as the temperatures variations continue. The doctors advise individuals to seek medical consultation instead of resorting to home remedies to prevent potential adverse effects in the future.

According to the doctors, eye allergies triggered by seasonal shifts are predominantly experienced by individuals during the months of March and April. Senior eye specialist at Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) hospital Dr Sushil Ojha informed that the change in weather has led to a significant increase in cases of eye allergies among people, particularly children. He noted that starting from the month of March, an average of 30 patients with eye allergies visit the OPD daily. “The seasonal changes generally trigger these allergies due to pollen with varied flora in bloom at this time. Pollen can cause eye allergies with symptoms such as redness, itching, pain, fatigue and watery eyes during this season,” said Ojha.

To prevent seasonal allergies, he recommended wearing sunglasses when outdoors and advised that children engage in outdoor activities during the morning hours to reduce exposure to allergens. He also emphasised the importance of consulting a doctor when experiencing symptoms of seasonal eye allergies rather than self-medicating.

Another eye specialist Dr Amit Singh told this correspondent that the ongoing construction work on city roads, combined with seasonal changes, has led to an increase in cases of eye allergies. In comparison to regular days, there had been a 50 per cent rise in eye allergy cases by the month of March. Common symptoms of seasonal allergies include itchiness, redness and watering of the eyes. In severe cases, individuals may experience photophobia, making it difficult to see in bright light. To prevent these issues, it is advisable to use protective eyewear-like goggles as a precaution against seasonal allergies. Singh further stressed the importance of consulting a doctor if experiencing symptoms of eye allergies, rather than relying on over-the-counter medications or home remedies.
