Eye allergy cases rise due to seasonal changes

PIONEER NEWS SERVICE | Dehradun

The combination of humidity, pollen and heat related to seasonal changes has led to an increase in eye allergies among residents of the city, the doctors said. With March beginning, notable fluctuations in temperature have been recorded. Each year, the transition between seasons tends to result in a higher number of allergy cases among people. Doctors advised that taking appropriate precautions can help individuals avoid experiencing eye allergies during this time.

Senior eye specialist at the Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) hospital Dr Sushil Ojha said that as the season shifts and flowering occurs—commonly referred to as pollination—there is a rise in eye allergy cases. Compared to typical days, the frequency of eye allergies has surged by about 15 per cent over the past week. During this allergy season, people of all ages may experience symptoms such as burning, redness, itching and increased sensitivity in their eyes. To prevent this issue, it is essential to take appropriate precautions, such as wearing protective eyewear whenever outdoors. It is also advisable to avoid home remedies and rely on doctor-prescribed eye drops to manage allergic reactions, he stated.

Eye specialist Dr Amit Singh said that by the end of February, he began to see a rise in cases of eye allergies among patients. He said that seasonal allergies typically start in April, but this year, they have emerged a month earlier. The combination of humidity, pollen and rising temperatures due to weather changes has contributed to an increase in eye allergy cases. Individuals experiencing eye allergies may face symptoms such as itching, a burning sensation, stickiness, watery discharge, redness and more. If individuals rub their eyes while suffering from these allergies, it can lead to conjunctivitis.

Dr Singh further said that people may experience frequent eye itching, so it’s advisable to limit outdoor activities during this time. He added that the primary precaution to prevent eye infections and allergies is to wear protective eyewear when going outdoors.
