Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that fairs play an important role in preserving culture. He said this while virtually attending the inauguration of the Uttarayani Mela at Bageshwar on Sunday.

Addressing the gathering on the occasion, the CM said that due to the efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Kedarkhand and Manaskhand regions have been brought on the global platform. Greeting the people, he said that the Uttarayani Mela and this period is special this year as the Pran Pratishtha will be held in the Ram temple in Ayodhya on January 22. “I was unable to reach this fair due to other programmes planned earlier and the busy schedule of official works though I strongly wished to attend the Uttarayani Mela myself,” he said.

The CM further said that Makar Sankranti is one such festival which is important from both the spiritual and scientific aspects. Bathing in the sacred Sarayu river and offering prayers at the Bagnath temple in Bageshwar on this occasion has carried special religious significance since ancient times.  “This cultural fair provides us an opportunity to directly learn about the nation and culture and will definitely contribute to strengthening the social harmony for the coming generations,” the CM said.

Paying respects to freedom fighters including Badri Datt Pandey, he said that due to their inspiration, the social evil of the Coolie Begar system ended. He also appealed to the public to contribute towards making Uttarakhand the best Indian State and for adopting cleanliness as a strong habit.

Expressing his views on the occasion, MP Ajay Tamta said that the Sarayubagarh revolution has its own special significance. He said that under PM Modi’s leadership, the nation is becoming a global power. The construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya and Pran Pratishtha of the lord there is a moment of pride for the nation, he said.

District Panchayat president Basanti Devi, MLAs Suresh Gadiya and Parvati Dass also addressed the gathering on the occasion.
