Family & villagers rejoice at Vandana’s Olympic hat trick

The family members of Vandana Katariya who made history by becoming the first Indian woman hockey player to score a hat trick in the Olympics celebrated her feat with scores of locals and personalities who visited their home at Roshnabad in Haridwar district with sweets on Saturday. Her three goals in India’s 4-3 win against South Africa elicited celebrations in her locality here in Haridwar with the government also announcing that it will make her the brand ambassador of the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign in Uttarakhand.

Her elder brother Chandrashekhar Katariya said that along with the family, the whole village was rejoicing in her major achievement. Reaching her home to wish the family members, Haridwar district magistrate C Ravishankar said that along with the district, Vandana had brought fame to the whole state. He said that he had learnt from her family how she had struggled and worked hard to reach this position. He further said that the state government will make her the brand ambassador of the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign so that in the future girls take inspiration from her to give a new direction to their life.
Meanwhile, sports lovers especially in Haridwar rejoiced at Vandana’s achievement. Her first coach in Haridwar, Krishna Kumar, who was then the district sports officer and had motivated her to shift from athletics to hockey also visited her home to wish the Katariya family. Along with her family members and locals from the neighbourhood, the Haridwar senior superintendent of police D Senthil Avoodai Krishnaraj S and others also celebrated her hat trick by exchanging sweets at the Katariya residence.
