Females happy with 50 per cent reservation in student union election

Female students in many college and State universitied have expressed their satisfaction with the newly implemented 50 per cent reservation in student union elections, which are held annually. This decision was announced by the Education minister Dham Singh Rawat specifying that female students will now be granted equal representation in student union elections across government and non-government colleges, as well as university campuses in the state. In light of this initiative, the vice chancellors of all State universities have been instructed accordingly.

Notably, a total of 1,52,387 students are enrolled in higher education institutions in the State, with 1,00,272 being female students and 52,115 being male students. This translates to 65.8 per cent of the student population being female and 34.2 per cent being male. College University student Vishakaha Agnihotri, pursuing a bachelor of commerce degree expressed her appreciation towards the Education minister for implementing a 50 per cent reservation in student union elections. She said that she has been studying at the college since last year and during the previous student election, she and her female friends had shown interest in participating. Agnihotri believes that with this reservation, female students will be able to contribute effectively to fostering creative activities and promoting an educational environment.

“With the implementation of a 50 per cent reservation for female students in a student union election, the election is expected to become more engaging. This has been a long-awaited opportunity for female students. The inclusion of female students in the union election is believed to lead to a more peaceful and orderly process on campus,” said another female student Deepti Sharma.

Another female student at the graduation level Ishika Nagpal expressed the significance of female representation in student union elections, highlighting the empowerment it provides for making decisions concerning their college experience. She expressed optimism that the participation of female students in these elections will bring positive changes and address important issues at the college and university level more effectively going forward, she added.
