The field inspection under Swachchh Survekshan 2023 has started in the country and a team from the centre is expected to visit Dehradun next week. The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) is gearing up for this field inspection and has directed supervisors to ensure cleanliness related services like door to door collection and street cleaning are being done regularly. The corporation might also have to put extra efforts into gaining points during a field inspection in this eighth edition of the survey as waste management services in the city remained in a transitional phase for the past several months that severely affected cleanliness services like door to door services and roadside garbage accumulation among others.
After the discontinuation of the services of Ramky Enviro Engineers Limited (REEL), the corporation took months to select agencies to manage door to door services and operate the solid waste management and recycling plant in Sheeshambada. During this period, the sanitation conditions in several areas got worse which affected the opinions of many locals about the management of sanitation facilities by MCD. This might also affect the city negatively during field inspection by the team from the centre as public interaction is also a part of the inspection. It is one of the reasons that the MCD has recently started acting strictly against bulk waste generators (BWGs) of the city who do not dispose of garbage as per Solid Waste Management Rules 2016 as they form about 60 per cent of the garbage collected by the corporation. The segregation and disposal of organic wet waste at the source can significantly reduce the burden of garbage collection and its disposal in the waste management plant, as per the officials. According to them, this year has been more challenging than previous years in terms of improving sanitation facilities but MCD is making all possible efforts to ensure the city gets good points in the field inspection expected to be held next week.
