A major fire broke out in two garment shops located in Sarnimal Market in Dehradun’s bustling Paltan Bazaar on Wednesday, causing extensive damage to garments and other goods stored on the upper floor of the building. No one was, however, hurt in the incident.
“After battling with the leaping flames for nearly three hours, the fire fighters doused the blaze, preventing it from spreading to nearby shops in the crowded market,” said the chief fire officer Abhinav Tyagi.
He further said that soon after receiving information about the fire, they rushed three fire tenders to the spot. “The staff reached the market in a few minutes and started the rescue and firefighting operations. As the blaze was strong with a risk of it spreading to nearby shops, additional fire tenders were put into service. A total of six fire tenders were deployed to control the blaze,” he added.
Sharing more, he said that the fire had engulfed the third floor of the three-storey buildings, where a large quantity of garments, including Sarees, suits and other clothing items, were stored. “The narrow lanes of the market and the presence of highly combustible materials made the operation quite challenging. Had the fire spread further, it could have caused massive damage across the crowded market. The operation involved a large team of fire personnel, who used multiple hose lines and a water relay system to ensure a steady water supply. The operation helped save property worth crores of rupees and prevented a major fire tragedy in the heart of Dehradun,” he stated.
