First case of dengue reported in Dehradun

Tuesday, 03 September 2024 | PNS | DEHRADUN

The first case of dengue has been reported in Dehradun. A patient suspected of suffering from dengue was admitted to the Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) hospital where an ELISA test turned out positive on Monday evening. The patient is a 61-year-old resident of the Banjarawala area of Dehradun. Apart from this, many suspected patients of dengue are getting treatment in other hospitals in the district.

The Dehradun chief medical officer Dr Sanjay Jain stated that the onset of September has brought about heightened concerns regarding dengue cases in the district. The environment during this month is conducive to breeding of mosquitoes. Consequently, the department has instructed relevant officials to exercise increased vigilance throughout the month to tackle the dengue cases effectively. Jain underscored the importance of collaboration not only with the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) but also with the general public, urging them to eliminate any potential breeding grounds like stagnant water in their vicinity. He advised individuals to regularly replace the water in items like coolers or refrigerator trays every other day to mitigate the risks of dengue transmission.

DEHRADUN: The Director of the National Health Mission (NHM), Swati S Bhadauria informed that 19 cases of dengue had been reported in the State till Sunday evening, with one being reported on Monday. She highlighted that the State Health department, in coordination with the NHM, has been effectively carrying out dengue control activities at the grassroots level, resulting in the relatively low number of reported cases. Notably, no deaths related to dengue have been recorded so far. In 2019, there were 947 reported cases of dengue by August, and in 2023, there were 732 cases. However, this year, only 20 cases have been reported so far, indicating a significant reduction. She emphasised on the need to sustain efforts for dengue prevention and control to avoid future outbreaks.

Various measures like intensive source reduction activities, fogging, indoor spray, public awareness campaigns, and inter-departmental collaboration are being implemented this year, she added. The NHM director further informed that 18,56,611 households have been surveyed by Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) workers for larval control and 5,23,663 households have been surveyed by dengue volunteers in the State. The Health department has allocated dengue isolation beds in hospitals, ensuring the availability of medicines and testing facilities. A total of 2,161 beds with mosquito nets have been reserved in government and private hospitals across Uttarakhand, she informed.
