First live-in relationship registration done under UCC in Haldwani’s rural area

The first live-in relationship registration in Haldwani’s rural area has been done under the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). With the implementation of UCC in the State, the registration of marriages and live-in relationships has been made mandatory. The first instance of a live-in relationship from a rural area in Haldwani has come to light.
The Haldwani sub divisional magistrate Paritosh Verma officiated the registration of the relationship under the UCC. He said that this is the first instance of a live-in relationship being registered from the region’s rural area. The woman who registered her relationship on Friday is reported to have one child from her earlier marriage. One has to apply online to register a relationship and the process for granting approval or rejecting the application has tobe completed within 30 days. The municipal commissioner (registrar) is responsible for registering the live-in relationship in urban areas while the sub divisional magistrate has been made responsible for the task in rural areas.
It is pertinent to mention here that with registration of live-in relationships has also been made mandatory under the UCC with there also being a provision for six months jail, Rs 25,000 penalty or both in case the relationship is not registered. The registrar will also inform the parents or the guardians of those who register their live-in relationship.
