At a time when both men and women are following dietary and exercising regimes sans professional advice, experts have advised that fitness enthusiasts should limit their intake of protein powder. Despite being aware of the drawbacks and restrictions, many individuals, particularly young adults, choose to incorporate protein powder into their fitness routines. However, experts caution that excessive consumption of protein powder can have adverse effects on their health. Adding a homemade protein-rich diet in meals can help individuals maintain their fitness levels, the experts said.

Pradhant Sharma, a local resident who regularly works out in the gymnasium said that he regularly visits the gym and follows his trainer’s dietary advice. He said that to achieve fitness goals faster, he has recently started consuming protein powder with his milk and drinks.

In addition, many other fitness enthusiasts claim that incorporating protein powder into their routine helps to expedite muscle building.

A Dehradun-based gym instructor Satyam told this correspondent that many fitness enthusiasts choose to use protein powder to enhance their appearance and muscle mass- considered fitness. However, he advised individuals to always consult their gym trainer before incorporating protein powder into their diet. Satyam highlighted that protein powders like those mixed with buttermilk are recommended for fitness enthusiasts as they do not have adverse effects on their health. He emphasised that individuals not engaged in regular workouts should refrain from using protein powder as it may disrupt their digestive system. Apart from this, individuals who engage in workouts and visit the gym should consume products certified by Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FCCI) or International Chamber of Commerce India (ICCI) protein powder within recommended limits to avoid adverse effects, Satyam said.

Further, Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) Hospital dietician Dr Richa Kukreti highlighted a concerning trend among young adults turning to protein powder to enhance their muscle mass. She warned that excessive intake of protein powder alongside a regular diet rich in protein sources like milk and eggs can lead to health issues such as heart strokes and increased uric acid levels. She urged people to refrain from consuming such protein powders and instead choose natural sources like chicken, eggs, tofu and paneer for maintaining fitness. She also emphasised the importance of consuming protein powder in moderation to prevent adverse health effects.
