Five arrested for kidnapping youth, demanding Rs one lakh ransom in Vikasnagar

A youth was kidnapped from his house by five accused in Vikasnagar area of Dehradun on Monday, but the police rescued him within a few hours and arrested five accused late at night on the same day. After kidnapping the youth they allegedly demanded Rs one lakh to his mother to release her son.

According to the victim Shakti Pundir’s mother Pushpa Pundir’s complaint, five unidentified men forcibly entered their house in the evening. They pretended to be members of a religious group and threatened to send the victims to jail on false charges of drug trafficking. After barging into the home and falsely accusing the youth of drug smuggling, they kidnapped him and later demanded ransom from his family.

She said that they allegedly beat her son and took him away in a car. After some time, they called her from an unknown number and demanded Rs one lakh to release her son. After receiving the complaint, the police registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). On the directions of the Dehradun senior superintendent of police Pramendra Dobal, special police teams were formed to solve the case. The teams checked footage from CCTV cameras near the spot and activated their informer network. They also traced the vehicle used in the crime.

By late night on March 2, the police rescued Pundir safely from the Vikasnagar area and arrested five accused involved in the case. The police said that the accused are habitual offenders who are known to target those habituated to substance abuse.

The arrested accused have been identified as Vikas Vairagi and Neeraj from Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh along with Praveen, Sachin and Naveen from the Vikasnagar and Dakpatthar areas of Dehradun district. Further investigation in the case is underway.
