Five persons including a retired brigadier were killed in a road accident in Pithoragarh district on Wednesday. The passengers of the ill-fated vehicle were returning to their native village from Karnprayag.
According to the information received from the police, retired Brigadier ( Retd) Vinod Kumar Chand who lived in Pithoragarh had gone to his native village Buga to attend a religious ceremony.
On the advice of priests Chand went to Karnprayag for a bathing ritual before the worship. On Wednesday he along with seven others was returning from Karnprayag when the vehicle fell into a gorge on Thal-Muwani road.
According to the police five people died on the spot while two others were seriously injured. The injured have been admitted to the district hospital.
