Four dead, four injured after jeep falls into Kail river

Four persons died and four were injured when the Bolero taxi they were travelling in fell down the mountainside into the Kail river in the Dewal block of Chamoli district on Thursday evening.

According to officials, the district control room informed the Tharali police station in-charge at about 4 PM that a vehicle had met with an accident near Losari village on the Dewal-Ghes motor road. The police and district disaster response force personnel reached the site of the mishap to conduct the search and rescue operation.

The locals informed that the jeep had fallen about 500 metres down the mountainside into the Kail river. A total of eight persons were in the vehicle at the time of the mishap. The locals and rescue teams jointly rescued four injured persons who were sent by ambulance to the community health centre in Dewal. Four bodies were also extricated and sent to the hospital for further procedures. The authorities are investigating to ascertain the actual cause of the accident.

Those killed in the mishap have been identified as Janki Devi (28) of Kheta, Arjun Singh (60) of Ghes, Alam Singh (54) of Ghes and Deepu Singh of Kheta, all from Dewal block. The injured are also local residents of the area. After primary treatment, they were referred to a higher centre for further treatment.
