Free camp and awareness lectures to mark Bone and Joint Week

The Bone and Joint Week organised by the Indian Orthopedic Association is being observed from August 1 to 6. During this week Sanjay Orthopaedic, Spine and Maternity Centre will be organising free operations and public awareness lectures in various educational institutions and media outlets. Under this programme, on August 6 a free orthopaedic and BMD camp will be organised at the centre. Addressing the media, orthopaedic and spine surgeon Dr Gaurav Sanjay said that the possibility of fractures due to road traffic accidents is increasing. Vitamins and minerals are needed irrespective of age in addition to protein to strengthen bones.He advised that milk, milk products and eggs are very good, cheap and natural sources of minerals.
The theme of this year’s Bone and Joint Week is “Strong Bones, Stronger Nation”. Padma Shri awardee orthopaedic surgeon Dr BKS Sanjay said that the consumption of coarse grains should be increased as these are a good source of energy and the nutrients found in millets are very beneficial for the health of bones.
He said that earlier people believed that coarse grains were meant mainly for the poor but today coarse grains are becoming a part of the food of the rich also. Millets are a good, cheap and accessible way to strengthen bones, he added.
