The State food safety and drug administration department (FSDA) is gearing itself up to prevent sale and supply of adulterated food items during the festive season. The additional commissioner of the department R K Singh said on Friday that they receive complaints of sale of adulterated food items during the festive season every year. “So we are alert and are organising special campaigns during which we are inspecting shops and even godowns to stop sale of adulterated food items,” he said.
He further said that their main focus areas are the prominent grocery shops to which the people in large numbers throng for Deepawali shopping and they would do maximum sampling there. “Adulteration happens principally in food items like flour, gram flour, buckwheat flour, spices, oil, ghee, milk, cheese, mawa and sweets,” he said.
Singh further said that as per their past experiences, greater part of the adulterated food items are brought into the State from districts of neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, particularly those adjacent to the plain districts of Uttarakhand. “Keeping this in view, we have instructed the department officers to be on maximum alert and conduct raids if needed at the inter-state checkpoints in Dehradun, Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar and Nainital districts,” he added.
Singh further appealed to the people to share information regarding sale and supply of suspicious food items with the department, using the toll-free number 18001804246. “This will enable the department to take swift and strict actions against the unscrupulous traders and suppliers,” he added.
