Ganga flowing just below danger mark in Haridwar

City & villages flooded, road blocked after debris falls from hills

Tuesday, 11 July 2023 | PNS | HARIDWAR

In latest Uttarakhand news, with rain relentlessly lashing Uttarakhand over the past few days, Haridwar district is bearing the brunt of nature’s fury as major parts of the city and the rural areas have got submerged in water. Meanwhile, with the rise in the water level of Ganga, it is now flowing just 1.10 metre below the danger mark. Plus, boulders slipped off the hills and fell on the highway at Brahmpuri, resulting in blockage of the road.

Yet, the kanwadiyas continue arriving in the holy city in large numbers to fetch sacred water from Ganga, braving the incessant and heavy rain. The ongoing Kanwad Yatra coupled with rain resulted in long traffic snarls on the highway which prompted the SSP Haridwar Ajay Singh to hit the road and take control of things himself. The stretch of the road from Singhdwar to Prem Nagar Ashram Chowk was cleared of the traffic pileup under the SSP’s initiative.

On the other hand, the flood water from swollen Ganga submerged a large swathe of agricultural land in Khanpur. Many villages across the district got inundated with the flood water gushing in. The administration, on alert mode round the clock, has been monitoring the water levels of the rivers with the levels found rising fast in Ganga, Solani and Banganga.
