Gangotri MLA seeks cancellation of planned liquor shop in Harshil following public opposition

PIONEER NEWS SERVICE | Uttarkashi
Following strong opposition from the public, the Gangotri MLA Suresh Chauhan has directed the district administration to cancel the process for opening a licensed liquor shop in the Harshil area of Uttarkashi. The authorities had planned to open licensed liquor vends to check bootlegging in such places where tourism is rising.
However, women from eight villages in the Upla Taknor area of the district met the MLA and demanded that the planned outlet in Harshil should not be opened. Chauhan talked to the district magistrate and told him to cancel the process for opening this outlet. He told the women the idea of opening a liquor in the maternal place of Goddess Ganga is condemnable. Assuring the women that such activities will not be allowed in the area, he stressed on the need for collective efforts to maintain the sanctity of the region.
Agreeing with Chauhan, the women said that they will work to keep their region clean and free of substance abuse. Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Harshil and Mukhwa, the MLA also said that the State government is undertaking various steps to further boost tourism in the region.
