Gangotri national park reopened to visitors

The Gangotri national park was reopened for visitors on Saturday after a winter break of four months. The historic Gartangali trek in Uttarkashi was also reopened to the visitors on the same day. With the reopening of the national park’s gates, visitors will now be able to visit Gaumukh, Tapovan, Nelang and Gartangali. On the first day 47 tourists went to visit Gartangali.
The Forest department personnel reopened the gates of the Gangotri national park after offering prayers at the Kankhu barrier, one kilometer from Gangotri. The ranger of Gangotri range Pratap Singh Panwar said that the number of visitors has increased in the past two years after the Covid-19 pandemic. The number of tourists is expected to increase further in the coming season. On the first day 47 tourists went to visit Gartangali, he added.
The Gangotri national park was established in 1989 and is spread over an area of 1,553 square kilometers and scales up to an altitude of 7,073 metres. The national park is enveloped in lush coniferous forests, meadows and glaciers. Some of the wildlife inhabiting this region includes bharal or blue sheep, black bear, brown bear, Himalayan Monal, Himalayan snowcock, Himalayan Tahr, musk deer and snow leopard.
