The garbage collection work resumed on Friday after the sanitation workers of the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) deferred their strike after three days. However, heaps of garbage were still observed in many roadside areas. The door to door garbage collection service was also resumed in only some wards due to which many people dumped garbage in the open on Friday too.
Due to the celebration of Mahashivratri, garbage generation also increased in many areas adding to the heaps of garbage accumulated for the past four days. The municipal employees along with sanitation workers went on strike after the Salt MLA Mahesh Singh Jeena allegedly misbehaved with Dehradun municipal commissioner Gaurav Kumar and staff on Tuesday. This converted many areas of the city into open air dumpyards. However, the sanitation workers and MCD employees returned to work after senior officials from the administration assured them that action will be taken accordingly after the committee under the supervision of Garhwal commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey completes its inquiry in the matter. Dehradun city generates about 400 metric tonnes of garbage daily and the garbage accumulated in the past four days is expected to exceed about 1,200 metric tonnes.
The chief municipal health officer Dr Avinash Khanna said that the sanitation workers started work on Friday but considering the bulk of garbage generated in the past four days, it will take at least two more days for proper disposal. He said that all sanitation inspectors and supervisors have been directed to ensure proper disposal of accumulated garbage in their respective areas. The door to door service will also be resumed in all wards like earlier, he added.
