A team of five students from the Department of Physics of HNB Garhwal University was recently selected for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)-backed Space Generation Advisory Council Asteroid Search Campaign conducted by International Astronomical Search Collaboration.
This programme of NASA is ongoing from November 1 to 26. Sanjeev Kumar and Karan Singh (research students in Physics), Mahavir Prasad and Shivani Kulasari (Masters students in Physics) and Praveen Kumar (Bachelors student – PCM group) under the supervision of senior physicist Alok Sagar Gautam, are participating to discover main-belt asteroids and near-earth objects.
The Garhwal University team will attempt to discover asteroids by analysis of astronomical data images received from the Pan-STARRS Telescope of the Institute of Astronomy, University of Hawaii. Gautam said that it is a matter of pride for Garhwal University that the students of the Physics department have been selected in this asteroid search campaign. “Our students will be able to establish the name of the university at the world level.
Further, such activities will help and inspire the students for future astrophysics and data based research,” said Gautam.
