Gartang Gali recording footfall upswing

Tuesday, 30 APRIL 2024 | PNS | UTTARKASHI

In latest news from Uttarakhand, Gartang Gali, located in the charming Nelong Valley of Uttarkashi district near the India-China border, is witnessing substantial tourist footfalls. Notably, it was opened for visitors in 2021 after a hiatus of 59 long years.  As per the Gangotri National Park officials, nearly 3000 tourists visited the 150-year-old wooden lined staircase in the last 23 days and the park administration received revenue of close to Rs 4.50 lakh. Nestled at an impressive altitude of 11,000 ft, this was a traditional route used by the merchants to trade between India and Tibet. Given its ragged condition, it was closed to visitors after the 1962 Indo-China war.    It was renovated and then opened in 2021.
Gangotri National Park deputy director Ranganath Pandey said that the gates of the park were opened for tourists on April 1. He further said that the surging tourist footfalls in Gartang Gali were an encouraging development for them.
