To commemorate the 51st anniversary of the renowned Chipko movement that started from Chamoli for environmental protection, programmes were organised in the native village of Gaura Devi- deemed as the mother of the movement- in Raini. On this occasion, the villagers pledged to protect forests.
The villagers said that they felt proud of the fact that the globally acclaimed Chipko movement had started in their village with Gaura Devi in the forefront. “The significance of this ecological movement is growing across the world with the passage of time. This is a day to reaffirm our commitment to save trees, come what may,” said a villager.
Commemorative programmes were also organised at Ravigram in Jyotirmath where an environmental awareness campaign was conducted among the people.
