Taking cognisance of the fire which damaged the radiology department, the administration of Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) hospital has instructed the officials concerned to investigate the cause of the incident. A bang was followed by a fire in the radiology department of the old building of the GDMC, reportedly due to a short circuit. N0ne of the patients or staff members were injured during the incident. The hospital staff, including guards, nurses and doctors, ensured the safety of the patients and effectively managed the situation.

Talking to The Pioneer, the medical superintendent of GDMC hospital Dr Anurag Aggarwal expressed concern regarding the incident at the hospital. He informed that despite the unfortunate occurrence, he was relieved that no harm was caused to the patients or staff members. Aggarwal commended the hospital workers for their swift response and care for the patients during the crisis. He stated that the fire at the radiology department was due to a short circuit on Monday, attributed possibly to dampness in the walls of the old building during the rainy season. However, in order to determine the root cause of the fire incident, the administration has instructed the relevant officials to conduct an investigation, he added.

He further informed that additionally, when the new building is constructed, the administration will prioritise relocating the radiology department, which houses high-voltage machines, to the new facility to prevent similar incidents.

Regarding the service disruption in the radiology department due to the fire incident, he noted that there are plans to temporarily move the ultrasound machines from the radiology department to the emergency department. Further, all ultrasound procedures, both for the admitted patients and others, are currently being carried out at the OPD building.
