The Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) hospital has extended the free screenings for eye diseases and cataract surgery camps campaign by seven days, as initiated under the leadership of governor lieutenant general (retd) Gurmit Singh, the GDMC principal Dr Geeta Jain said.
Addressing the media on Tuesday, she said that following the governor’s directive, nearly all medical colleges throughout the State have launched the campaign at their hospitals, where cataract surgeries and eye examinations are being provided at no cost. The campaign initially commenced on December 25 and continued till December 31. The GDMC hospital also participated in this initiative during the said period. She further noted that the entire eye department team has made significant efforts to ensure its success, resulting in approximately 90 eye surgeries completed under this campaign at the hospital. In addition to cataract surgery, the administration has successfully conducted a variety of eye surgeries as part of this campaign.
She further added that she has also noted that due to the changing weather conditions, including the onset of the rainy season, and in light of the favourable success rate, the administration has opted to extend the campaign for an additional seven days. During this extension, the hospital team will provide a range of eye surgeries and eye treatments at no cost, along with necessary medical facilities. She emphasised that by December 31, numerous eye surgeries have been performed at the hospital. Further, individuals from various states have travelled here for these procedures, she stated.
Senior eye specialist at the hospital, Dr Sushil Ojha said that nearly all types of eye surgeries have been carried out through topical methods during the campaign. He explained that topical eye surgery involves the application of a drop to numb the eye area prior to the operation, with no injections required for anesthesia. He further emphasised that this approach enhances patient comfort and safety.
Notably, patients who have received surgical services under this initiative have shared their experiences. Many of these individuals travelled from Bareilly, Delhi and other locations to undergo eye surgeries at the GDMC. They reported that the staff at GDMC was efficient and provided services in an exemplary manner.
