GDMC holds symposium on world diabetes day

World diabetes day was celebrated in Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) on Monday. A symposium was organised by the department of community medicine to mark the day. The theme of this year’s World diabetes day is ‘access to diabetes education.
Speaking on the occasion, the Principal of the GDMC, Dr Ashutosh Sayana said that diabetes is spreading at maximum rate from among the non communicable diseases in modern times and the persons dying from the disease are also increasing. Stressing on the need for creating awareness in the society he said that the disease can be controlled by adopting a healthy lifestyle and having a proper diet. The head of department (HoD) of the community medicine department, Dr Devrat Rai said that the World Health Organisation (WHO) has started observing the day to increase awareness for diabetes. He said that the government of India has started many national programmes to control the non communicable diseases and for it community health officers are appointed in health and wellness centres. Dr Rai said that nine per cent of the population in the 20 to 70 years age group in India is suffering from diabetes which is a matter of grave concern.
The Post Graduate (PG) students of the college also presented their views on different aspects of the disease. The faculty members, senior residents, interns and MBSS students took part in the programme.
