GDMC staff wear black arm bands to express solidarity with Dr Uniyal

Expressing their solidarity with assistant professor Dr Nidhi Uniyal, the faculty members and staff of the Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) here have resolved that they would not visit the homes of VIPs unless given written orders for the same. To register their protest against the alleged humiliation of the Dr Uniyal by the wife of Health secretary, the faculty members wore black arm bands while working on Saturday.  The staff members of medicine, surgery, paediatrics, ophthalmology and gynaecology departments of GDMC hospital were seen wearing black arm bands on the day.

 The faculty members and doctors working in the biggest government hospital and medical college of the state have also written a letter to the Principal of the college Dr Ashutosh Sayana in which they have clearly said that they would not visit the homes of VIPs for health related check ups. The doctors have reportedly told the authorities that will visit the homes of VIPs on written orders.

On Thursday the assistant professor of general medicine at GDMC, Dr Nidhi Uniyal resigned from her post alleging high handedness of the Health secretary. In her resignation letter she said that on being asked to treat the ailing wife of health secretary she visited his house along with two other staff members. Dr Uniyal alleged that on being ill treated by the wife of the secretary she left their house and came back to the hospital. Later she was asked to tender an apology to the wife of the secretary but she refused. Immediately after this Dr Uniyal was transferred from GDMC, Dehradun to Soban Singh Jeena Medical College, Almora. In protest, she resigned from her post and her resignation triggered a wave of anger in the social media with users castigating the officer and his wife for calling the doctor to their house and then insulting her. On Friday the Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami took cognizance of the issue and cancelled the transfer of the doctor and ordered a high level inquiry in the whole incident.
