Geological report on Joshimath satisfactory, lesson for those blaming major projects: BJP

Wednesday, 27 September 2023 | PNS | DEHRADUN

Expressing satisfaction at the geological report on Joshimath affected by land subsidence, the Bharatiya Janata Party has assured that disaster management plans for the area will be finalised soon based on the report and under central monitoring. Reiterating its commitment to a safe and prosperous Joshimath, the BJP said that the report is also a slap on the faces of political parties blaming projects related to national security for the Joshimath subsidence without any facts.

The BJP State president Mahendra Bhatt said that the collective report of different Central and State expert agencies on Joshimath was awaited while in the meantime the State government relief works were executed and compensation was provided to the affected people in the area. Now that the report has been received by the State government, the main reasons for the subsidence have been ascertained to be the carrying capacity of the city and sewer and other water seeping into the ground. During the time of the disaster itself the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami  had directed that the carrying capacity of all the cities in the State should be ascertained. The report received by the State government will be studied in detail and then sent to the Central government for necessary directions. Considering all the findings stated in the report, the plan for disaster management in the affected area will be given final shape, said Bhatt.

He said that this report is also a slap on the faces of the political parties which were trying to get national importance projects closed using the disaster as a pretext. “All know how important the all-weather road project and Rishikesh-Karnprayag rail project are for the security of our borders. The power projects under construction in the region are being built to power lakhs of homes not only in the State but also in the nation. However, the Congress and communist organisations are so bent upon opposing the BJP that they will not hesitate to shut down such projects of national importance. Such political parties directly or indirectly spread confusion to get such projects closed down and also agitated without any scientific facts following the Joshimath disaster. The local patriotic public understood their intentions and did not support them. The anarchic elements have been exposed now by the scientific report,” said the BJP State president.
