In latest news from Dehradun, 18 products from Uttarakhand, including Mandua, Jhangora and Lal Chowl, have been provided with the geographical indication (GI) tag, giving these popular products of the State region-specific identity. This will stop sale of these produces in other names in the markets and also prevent companies from claiming these as their own products. Notably, the GI registration wing of the department for promotion of industry and internal trade (DPIIT) bestows this tag to promote local products as part of the Vocal for Local mission. With this, the number of GI-tagged products from Uttarakhand has gone up to 27. Those in the know said that such tagging helps these products getting sold in foreign markets easily. Besides, it may boost employment in the mountainous parts of the State and increase the volume of revenue collection for the State government.
