Godiyal questions appointment of administrators in Panchayat bodies

The former Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Ganesh Godiyal has said that by appointing administrators in the Panchayati Raj bodies, the State government has shown insensitivity towards Panchayat representatives. He said that the Panchayat representatives were demanding that the State government should extend the tenure of the Panchayati Raj bodies to compensate for the Covid-19 pandemic period during which they could not undertake any developmental activities in their areas.
He said that the government had the option of either holding the Panchayat elections on time or extending the tenure of existing Panchayati Raj bodies to accommodate the demand of the Panchayat representatives. “However the government decided to exercise the easiest and most convenient option of appointing government officers as administrators in the Panchayati Raj bodies of the State. This shows that the State government is insensitive towards the aspirations of the local people,’’ he said.
Godiyal expressed confidence that the people and Panchayat representatives will remember this insensitivity of the State government in the Panchayat elections.
On Tuesday the State government had appointed administrators in the Panchayati Raj bodies in all the 12 districts of the State except Haridwar. The term of the Panchayati Raj bodies in these districts is ending later this month and the process of the new elections of the Panchayati Raj bodies has not started yet. The administrators will rule these bodies for a period of six months or till the constitution of new elected bodies.
