The governor lieutenant general (retd) Gurmit Singh launched the Sikdar Bakery product range at Raj Bhawan in Dehradun on World Food Day on Wednesday. The launch was organised in collaboration with the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board (UTDB) and the Doon Bakers Association. The governor said in the event that Sikdar Bakery range includes cakes, pastries and cookies made with unique Himalayan ingredients such as sea buckthorn, goji berries, saffron and various millets, making them not only delicious but also rich in nutrients. “These products are dedicated to the memory of the great trigonometry expert Radhanath Sikdar, who played a key role in measuring the height of Mount Everest,” he informed. He also inaugurated three pastries from Garhwali, Kumaoni, and Jaunsari pastries and said that these reflect the culinary heritage of Uttarakhand.
The Garhwali pastry was vanilla-flavoured infused with the essence of Buransh. The Kumaoni pastry was prepared from the combination of the popular Almora-based sweet Bal Mithai and chocolate, while the Jaunsari pastry was made using milk and walnuts, giving it a rich and distinctive taste. Efforts will be made to make these products available at bakeries, cafes and hotels across Uttarakhand, allowing tourists to savour the region’s flavors, he added. The Tourism minister Satpal Maharaj also praised Radhanath Sikdar’s legacy and expressed happiness in celebrating World Food Day with the launch of these bakery products. He said that the government will make efforts to ensure that these products reach widely across the State including at religious and tourist destinations. He expressed optimism that these special products would provide a new dimension to Uttarakhand’s flavours, culture, and traditions while enhancing the tourism experience.
