Govt planning to hand over river mining to private companies: Kapdi

Tuesday, 28 November 2023 | PNS | DEHRADUN

Uttarakhand Congress has alleged that the State government is planning to hand over the mining sector to the private companies.  Addressing the media here on Monday, the deputy leader of Congress legislature party in Vidhan Sabha Bhuwan Kapdi said that the government is giving the mining activities in the major rivers in Haridwar, Dehradun, Udham Singh Nagar and Nainital districts to private enterprises which will create a major economic crisis for the local people engaged in these activities. He said that the basic objective of the statehood movement was that the local people have the first right on the forest, land and water resources. Large number of locals are engaged in the mining sector but instead of helping them the government is handing over the mining to private companies. Kapdi said that the locals engaged in mining, transport and the labourers are opposing the government’s decision. Kapdi said that the private company will not only snatch away employment from the locals but will also sell the building material to the State’s at inflated prices.

He said that the Congress will hold agitation in all districts if the government continues with the process of handing over the mining sector to private players.

The Congress leader said that the BJP government is trying to sell every kind of employment. He added that in the scam involving the Uttarakhand Subordinate Services Selection Commission (UkSSSC), the government is still hesitant to act against the chairperson and secretary of the commission under whom the crime of sale of jobs was committed.  He also alleged that the government land in Rudrapur of Udham Singh Nagar was given to builders of other States at throwaway prices. Kapdi alleged that the State government is immersed neck deep in corruption. He said that in the name of the Smart City project, the government is actually changing the originality of the city once known for its natural beauty. The Congress leader said that the roads of the city are either dug up or laden with potholes which shows that the government is misleading the people in the name of smart city.
