Uttarakhand Forest minister Subodh Uniyal has directed the officials concerned to investigate the financial irregularities associated with the Forest department works that was highlighted in the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report for the financial year 2021-22. This was stated by the senior BJP leader and Dharampur MLA Vinod Chamoli.
The CAG report, presented in Vidhan Sabha during the recently concluded Budget Session, revealed that funds meant for forest conservation were allegedly used for purchasing iPhones, laptops, refrigerators, coolers and office decor. The audit also found violations in the transfer of forest land and misuse of funds allocated under the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA). These funds, meant to compensate for forest land diversion, were diverted for non-forest purposes, including building renovations and legal expenses. It also depicted delays in compensatory afforestation, stating that in 37 cases, afforestation took over eight years instead of the mandated one or two growing seasons.
On the question of the government’s action in the matter, Chamoli stated that Uniyal has asked officials concerned to examine the allegations in detail. He added that if similar irregularities are found during investigation, appropriate action will be taken against those responsible. The investigation is expected to determine the extent of financial mismanagement and accountability within the department.
