Govt working to reduce road accidents, assures minister

To mark the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and Indian Orthopaedic Association Bone and Joint Week, a public awareness lecture was organised at the Sanjay Orthopaedic, Spine & Maternity Centre in association with SHEWA Society on Sunday.
Addressing the gathering through the audio-visual medium as chief guest, Transport minister Chandan Ram Das expressed concern at the increasing number of road traffic accidents in Uttarakhand. He assured that the government will take the initiative to reduce road traffic accidents. The government has identified the black spots and is working to reduce them.
The Dehradun superintendent of police (Traffic) Akshay Konde IPS informed us about the various reasons for road traffic accidents in Dehradun. He appealed to the students to cooperate with the traffic police and to stop whenever they are asked by the traffic police. It is uncivilised and shameful if one doesn’t stop despite being asked to by the police, he said. Konde further said that citizens should inform the police about traffic rules violations through the app available for it.
Padma Shri recipient Kalyan Singh Rawat expressed concerned at the prevalence of bad road habits like occupying roads at night which increase the risk of mishaps.
Padma Shri recipient and orthopaedic surgeon Dr BKS Sanjay informed that he started a road safety campaign more than 20 years ago in 2001. Since then he has organised more than 200 free awareness lectures on the subject. Orthopaedic and spine surgeon Dr Gaurav Sanjay raised awareness of road safety through an audio-visual presentation. He showed the risk of using mobile phones while driving and the importance of using helmets and seat belts to reduce the damage from road traffic accidents.
