Green up Doon, clear traffic mess & make more public toilets, say Doonites to ULB candidates

Local residents are seeking afforestation, solutions to traffic congestion and the establishment of public toilets in the city and across the State, particularly in anticipation of the upcoming Urban Local Bodies (ULB) elections slated to be held on January 23. In this context, many local residents have voiced their concerns regarding the issues that they believe should be prioritised by the candidates running for the mayoral position. They emphasised that resolving these matters should not merely be viewed as a formality but rather as a crucial step towards the genuine implementation of the city’s development initiatives.

Local resident David Winget said that he has been residing in Dehradun for 10 years following his retirement from work. He has observed that the city’s development has so far been superficial rather than being substantive. Residents like himself expect the candidates for the mayoral position to prioritise concerns such as traffic congestion, afforestation, the introduction of pink and smart toilets and other factors vital to the city’s growth. Further, he emphasised that these initiatives should extend beyond Dehradun- the candidates across all districts should adopt similar strategies for the development of their respective areas.

“I have recognised that the development of the city has primarily been confined to improvements in roads, sanitation, construction and other related issues over many years. However, no authority has addressed the challenges that affect local residents, such as deforestation, which has impacted the health of many citizens and traffic congestion, which causes major inconvenience. Considering this, I would appreciate it if those contesting in the ULB elections could concentrate more on afforestation, traffic congestion solutions, and other pertinent matters. The mayoral candidates should prioritise this type of development throughout the city,” local resident Bindu Kalra said.

Similarly, retired government school teacher Lalita Pandey expressed her belief that it is high time for this year’s ULB elections to focus on resolving the issues affecting the city’s residents. She said that the local residents like her want the elected candidates to prioritise the establishment of public toilets and essential issues across the city as much as possible.
