Gun Hill ropeway in Mussoorie closed for maintenance, expected to resume by Holi

Mussoorie’s popular Gun Hill ropeway has been temporarily closed for maintenance and repairs. The officials stated that it is expected to resume operations by Holi, subject to clearance from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee, which will issue a safe running certificate after technical inspections. Until then, tourists will have to rely on the pedestrian route to reach Gun Hill.
The officials said that the maintenance work includes track rope shifting, installation of a new hauling rope, bearing replacements, hanger work and gearbox servicing. One of the critical tasks involves changing the main cable every three months. They said that the junctions of both ropeways undergo annual repairs and part replacements. These measures are taken to ensure the ropeway’s operational safety and reliability.
The officials stated that before the peak tourist season, a technical assessment is conducted to ensure safe operations. The ropeway’s cables undergo significant stress, particularly due to changing weather conditions, heavy snowfall, and rainfall. Regular replacements are necessary to maintain structural integrity and ensure the safety of passengers.
While the ropeway remains out of service, visitors can only reach Gun Hill by foot. This situation may pose challenges for elderly tourists and those with disabilities. However, the officials said that the ropeway management has assured that all necessary repairs will be completed at the earliest, aiming to reopen the service in time before Holi.
