Guv inaugurates 109th Kisan Mela at Pantnagar
Governor Baby Rani Maurya inaugurated the four-day 109th All India Kisan Mela at the GB Pant University of Agriculture and Technology here on Monday. Inspecting the various stalls at the venue, she asked the scientists to ensure that high yielding varieties and farming equipment reach the farmers so that the farmers may adopt these, increase their production and income. Maurya also purchased turmeric and gulal produced by women self help groups on the occasion.
Addressing the gathering on the occasion, the governor said that 80 per cent of farmers still reside in villages. She said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants the farmers to get proper rates for their produce so that they need not seek loans and so that their economic condition improves. The manner in which people encouraged farming during the Covid-19 pandemic is a good sign for the future. Pointing at the herbal wealth in Uttarakhand, she suggested that women will have to prepare herbal products to achieve self reliance for which women need to be trained through self help groups. The governor also expressed concern at the consistent drop in the groundwater level and stressed on the need for work on water conservation. Maurya also felicitated Padma Shri recipient farmer Prem Chandra Sharma on the occasion. MLAs Rajesh Shukla, Pushkar Singh Dhami, university vice chancellor Tej Pratap Singh, district magistrate Ranjana Rajguru and the university’s director (extension) Anil Kumar were also among those present on the occasion.
