The governor lieutenant general (retd) Gurmit Singh said that the contribution of great surveyors like Pandit Nain Singh, Kishan Singh, Kinthup and Radhanath Sarkar cannot be forgotten especially today when the whole country is celebrating the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. He also stressed on the use of latest technologies in survey work. The governor was speaking at the National Survey Day function organised at Survey of India here on Sunday. He also felicitated Kamala Rawat, a fifth generation descendant of the great surveyor Pandit Nain Singh on the occasion.

Addressing the gathering, Singh said, “Our great surveyors did remarkable survey work in the 18th century in difficult geographical conditions, without resources and while facing various challenges.  Their contribution is the basis of our present and future.  Today is an opportunity to remember our talented ancestors and express gratitude to them.”  The governor said that the great trigonometric survey was started on the occasion of National Survey Day.  He said that today monitoring and efficient management of earthquakes, landslides, floods and epidemics is being done using geospatial tools and technology. “The nation has come a long way in the field of survey. But our ancestors had to face many problems due to lack of resources.  Today there is a need to encourage the use of artificial intelligence, modernisation, transformation and latest technologies in the field of survey.  How technology is being used by Survey of India for the betterment of the people can be seen in execution of the Clean Ganga mission National Hydrology project,” said the governor.

Surveyor general of India, Sunil Kumar, deputy surveyor general Nitin Joshi, senior officers of Indian Forest Service and officers of Survey of India were also present on this occasion.
