Haldwani purification: Cong leaders submit complaints, demand FIR registration

Reacting to the registration of FIR on the leader of opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi in the Haldwani ‘purification’ incident, the Congress leaders and workers submitted written complaints against the ‘purification’ of the ground after the address of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, in different police stations of the State on Monday.
Pradesh Congress Committee president Ganesh Godiyal, leader of opposition in Vidhan Sabha Yashpal Arya, chairman of the campaign committee of Uttarakhand Congress Pritam Singh and other leaders went to different police stations in the State on Wednesday and submitted written complaints against what they alleged insult of Congress president Kharge. They demanded that FIR should be registered on those who were involved in the ‘purification’ of the ground after the address of Kharge.
Large number of workers of the Congress party led by PCC president Ganesh Godiyal submitted a complaint at Kotwali police station against the alleged ‘purification Yagna’ performed after the public meeting of Congress president Kharge at Ramlila Ground in Haldwani.
Congress workers said that two days after Kharge’s public meeting, some people attempted to ‘purify’ the ground by performing a Yagya and sprinkling Ganga water. They said that this act demonstrates a mentality of caste discrimination and social humiliation and is against the fundamental spirit of the Constitution.
Godiyal said that a case should be immediately registered under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 and other relevant legal provisions and strict action should be taken against the culprits.
He said that in 21st century India, declaring a public place ‘impure’ on the basis of a person’s caste and then ‘purifying’ it is not only shameful but also an insult to the Constitution and social equality.
Congress workers claimed that their fight is not for the honour of any one individual, but for safeguarding the Constitution, social justice and the dignity of every citizen. Those who discriminate and insult on the basis of caste should not receive political protection at any cost.
