Harak stakes claim on four assembly seats of Garhwal

Says he can contest from Yamkeshwar, Doiwala, Lansdowne and Kedarnath

Giving credence to the speculations that he is not interested in contesting from Kotdwar assembly constituency in the upcoming assembly elections, the powerful cabinet minister Harak Singh Rawat said on Monday that he wants to contest from Yamkeshwar assembly constituency this time. Known to change his assembly constituency after getting elected, Harak Singh Rawat has also claimed that he can win from any constituency of Garhwal.

He said that if the party allows he can contest from either of the Yamkeshwar, Doiwala, Lansdowne and Kedarnath assemblies in the upcoming assembly elections.

The statement of Rawat that he is interested in changing his constituency has created discomfiture for many leaders of the BJP who were planning to contest from these seats. By staking his claim from these seats Rawat has also made it clear that the party high command should give tickets to the person of his choice from at least five assembly constituencies.

It is worth mentioning here that apart from Kedarnath all the three assembly constituencies are represented by BJP candidates. The Yamkeshwar assembly constituency is represented by Ritu Khanduri Kumar. Apart from being a powerful woman leader Khanduri is daughter of former chief minister Major General (Retd) B C Khanduri. The Lansdowne assembly constituency is represented by BJP MLA Dilip Singh Rawat while in Doiwala the former CM Trivendra Singh Rawat is the sitting MLA. The Kedarnath assembly constituency is represented by Manoj Rawat of Congress.

The expression of the intention by Harak that he does not contest from Kotdwar is interesting since only recently he rocked the politics of the state by walking out of the cabinet meeting with a threat of resignation. Rawat had made the issue of Kotdwar medical college as his prestige point and was successful in pressuring the government to provide a budget of Rs 25 Crore for this medical college.
