After the efforts of sanitation teams to improve all aspects of sanitation in the city, the Municipal Corporation of Haridwar (MCH) has claimed that Haridwar will be declared a garbage-free city in about two weeks. Haridwar attained 244th position in 2020 and 285th position in 2021 making it one of the worst-performing cities in Swachch Survekshan considering which, the officials have stepped up efforts to make it at least among the top 150 cleanest cities this year.
The Haridwar municipal commissioner Dayanand Saraswati told The Pioneer that MCH has been working to improve the sanitation facilities of Haridwar for about six months and has established five garbage transfer stations this year to ensure proper garbage transfer and disposal. There were about 40 points across the city where the collected garbage was dumped and transferred to the waste management and recycling plant but this system will be eliminated soon to ensure proper disposal, said Saraswati. He said, “The corporation has also installed such bins in marketplaces that are attracting locals as well as tourists and encouraging them to utilise them for garbage disposal. Many tourists even click pictures with them. We have also been encouraging composting of biodegradable materials in temples and several temples have already adopted composting that has reduced the accumulation of garbage to a greater extent. Disposal of garbage in public has also been reduced in many locations too. These initiatives are helping us to improve the sanitation level here and within about two weeks, we will declare Haridwar a garbage-free city. ” He said that though such initiatives will help the corporation to attain good scores in SS22, the sanitation facilities will be maintained throughout the year.
