The agitating contractual workers of Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) received the support of former chief minister and senior Congress leader Harish Rawat on Tuesday. Rawat went to the place where these workers are demonstrating and undertaking a protest fast. He said that everyone is with the agitating workers. “The state government has forgotten the key role played by you during the pandemic of Covid-19 but we have not. We will not allow the state government to forget you,’’ he said.
Rawat said that the contractual workers are the real Covid warriors who saved many human lives during the Covid-19 pandemic even at the expense of their health and family lives. Launching an attack on the state government Rawat said that instead of recognising the valuable contribution of these Corona warriors by regularising their services, the state government is showing an exit door to them. He also held telephonic conversations with the health minister Dhan Singh Rawat and health secretary and requested that the services of these workers should be regularised.
It is pertinent to mention that more than 600 workers in various posts were hired by the state government on contract during the pandemic of Covid-19 in the year 2020. Their contract was renewed last year but with considerable decline in the cases of Covid-19, the state health department removed them.
